If you’re dreaming of desert engagement photos with warm red rocks, glowing sunsets, and classic Arizona scenery, Papago Park should be at the top of your list. It has that iconic Southwest look without needing to drive hours out into the desert — which is one of the reasons I love suggesting it for sessions when I’m photographing in the Phoenix area.
Between the natural rock formations, palm trees, giant cactus, and wide open skies, it gives such a beautiful variety of backdrops all within a short walk.

A Desert Oasis 15 minutes from Phoenix
One of the biggest perks of shooting at Papago Park is how close it is to the city. Papago Park sits just about 15-20 minutes from downtown Phoenix and right near Tempe and Scottsdale, so for couples visiting the area, you don’t have to take a huge chunk out of your day to travel to your session location!
It’s easily accessible, with plenty of parking (which is free), and is actually right next to the Phoenix Zoo!

The Best Part: No photography permits required
Another reason Papago Park is such a favorite for photographers is that you don’t need a permit to take photos there.
Some of the more popular Arizona desert locations require permits or have stricter photography rules, but Papago Park is super photographer-friendly. As long as you’re being respectful of the space and other visitors, sessions are easy to plan and stress-free.

When is the Best Time for a Session at Papago Park
Arizona desert weather can be intense depending on the time of year, so timing your session makes a big difference.
Best seasons for photos at Papago Park:
- Early spring (February–April)
- Late fall (November–December)
During these months, temperatures are much more comfortable and the desert light is beautiful.
If you’re planning a session in the warmer months, the key is timing.
Best time of day:
- Early morning sunrise sessions
- Golden hour right before sunset
Both give that soft, glowy desert light while helping avoid the hottest part of the day.

Planning Your Own Papago Park Couples Session
Whether you’re local to Phoenix or planning a trip to Arizona, Papago Park is such a beautiful and accessible location for couples photos, engagements, even a proposal (it’s actually where my brother proposed to his wife during the spring of their graduation from GCU!) The warm desert tones, unique rock formations, and glowing sunset light make it one of those spots that photographs beautifully no matter the season.
And if you’re wondering about booking a session here — I’d love to help make it happen!
Even though I’m based in Colorado, I travel often for sessions and absolutely love any excuse to spend time in Phoenix (especially when I can escape the Colorado winter for some desert sunshine!)
