consider Pass lake for your Colorado elopement (or Photo session)

If you’re dreaming of mountain photos or an intimate Colorado elopement with incredible alpine views but don’t want to spend hours hiking to get there, Pass Lake might be exactly what you’re looking for.

Tucked just below Loveland Pass in the Colorado Rockies, Pass Lake is one of my favorite locations to recommend for couples who want dramatic mountain scenery without the physical demands of a long mountain hike. With sweeping mountain views, a beautiful alpine lake, and a parking area right next to the scenery, it’s an incredibly accessible option for couples looking for epic views without a long trek.

Here’s everything you need to know when considering Pass Lake for your session (or elopement!)

Where Is Pass Lake in Colorado?

Pass Lake is located along Highway 6, just below Loveland Pass. It’s a convenient stop if you’re exploring spots along I-70, or making a trip to Keystone, Frisco, or even Breckenridge. The lake itself is about a 1-2 minute drive down from the top of the pass which is actually part of the Continental Divide!

One of the best parts about this location is that you don’t have to go far to find incredible scenery. You literally park right by one of the lakes and can already see incredible mountain views.

Why Choose Pass Lake for Your Elopement or Photos?

1. Incredible Mountain Views Without the Hike

Pass Lake offers beautiful mountain scenery in nearly every direction, making it an amazing option for couples who want that quintessential Colorado mountain backdrop without having to hike for it.

You can find gorgeous scenery right from the parking area, with the lake and surrounding mountains offering additional opportunities for photos nearby. It’s a great way to get a variety of images without spending your entire session walking from one location to another.

2. No Entry or Permit Feese

Another perk of Pass Lake is that there are no entry or permit fees required for visiting the location, including elopements.

That can make planning a little simpler compared with locations that require reservations, paid entry, or a more involved permitting process.

However, land-management rules and event requirements can change. If you’re planning a ceremony, especially one involving guests or vendors, I always recommend confirming the current regulations before finalizing your plans.

3. You Can Visit Loveland Pass, Too

One of my favorite things about choosing Pass Lake is how close it is to the top of the actual pass (Loveland Pass.)

The summit of Loveland Pass is only about a minute’s drive away, and it offers another incredible perspective of the surrounding mountains along the Continental Divide.

This makes it easy to incorporate both locations into your photo session or elopement timeline, giving you two distinct mountain backdrops without having to drive far between them.

If you’re hoping for a little variety in your gallery, this is a great way to make the most of the area.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Pass Lake?

In general, the best time of year to plan a Pass Lake photo session or elopement is from late May through October, depending on that year’s snowfall and road conditions.

Here’s a general idea of what to expect:

  • Late May through June: Snowmelt and lingering snow are possible, depending on the year. Road access and conditions around the lake can vary.
  • July through August: These months generally offer better access to the area, with summer mountain scenery and longer daylight hours. I have seen wildflowers in the area during this time of year which is soooo pretty!
  • September through October: Fall can be a beautiful time for mountain photos, but temperatures drop quickly at elevation, and early snowfall can affect access.
  • Late fall through spring: Access can be more complicated due to snow and road conditions, so don’t assume the parking area will be available just because the main highway is open.

A Note About Seasonal Road Access

Here’s something important to know when planning a visit to Pass Lake: just because Highway 6 is open doesn’t necessarily mean you can access the parking area.

When the main highway is plowed, the road into the lake’s parking area may not be cleared at the same time. This can affect when you’re able to get to the lake, even if the main route over Loveland Pass is technically open.

If you’re planning a session or elopement in late spring or late fall, make sure you check current road conditions before heading out. I also recommend having a backup location in mind in case snow or road access becomes an issue. You can check out other spots in Colorado that don’t require lots of hiking right here!

Planning Your Pass Lake Photo Session or Elopement

A little preparation goes a long way when you’re planning photos or an elopement in the Colorado mountains.

Here are a few things I’d keep in mind:

  • Check the weather and road conditions. Mountain weather can change quickly, and access can vary throughout the year. I always send weather check-ins a few days before your session so we can plan accordingly!
  • Dress for the elevation. Even on a sunny summer day, temperatures can be chilly and wind can pick up unexpectedly. Bring layers for sure!
  • Build in flexibility. If you’re planning an elopement, leave some breathing room in your timeline in case conditions change.

And, of course, you don’t have to figure everything out on your own! As a Colorado elopement photographer, I’m always happy to help couples think through location options, timing, and the logistics of creating a day that feels like them.
