When most people picture a Colorado engagement session or elopement, they imagine hiking miles into the mountains for those jaw-dropping views. And while I’m always up for an adventure, I do have to break this myth because some of the most beautiful locations in Colorado are just a short walk from the parking lot.
The best photos aren’t determined by how far you hike—they’re created by beautiful light, stunning scenery, and a location that lets you relax and enjoy the experience (and a talented photographer, of course). Whether you’re planning an engagement session, eloping with family who can’t hike long, or just want to fit in a fun session while you’re here visiting, I’ve got a whole list of incredible spots all over the state.
As a native Colorado photographer, these are my top 8 photo locations that will leave your jaw dropped with no huffing and puffing required from a long hike. You really can have alpine lakes, wildflowers, and 360 mountain views without pretending to be a seasoned back-packer.
1. Lily Lake – Rocky Mountain National Park, Estes Park
The lake is literally steps away from the parking lot and super accessible! The entire loop around the lake is fairly flat and very well kept. A portion of it is a beautiful wooden boardwalk that is literally so cute. There’s not a bad view from any part of the lake.
Depending on the time of year you decide to go, you may need to acquire a Timed Entry Reservation if during the summer between 9am-2pm for this specific location. Rocky Mountain National Park’s website keeps these dates and fee rules updated so be sure to check, or ask me once we start planning your session and I’ll give you the low-down.
Typically, sunset has the most gorgeous lighting for sessions here, and evenings in the spring/summer are great times to see elk and even moose, which is awesome especially for any out-of-staters wanting to see some of the local wildlife.
2. Pass Lake and Loveland Pass – Keystone
Another spot that you have incredible views seriously as soon as you step out of your car. Pass Lake is located right underneath Loveland Pass and has a couple of lakes, lots of trails, and a ton of gorgeous scenery – literally 360 views.
The best time to visit is end of May-October, as it does get lots of snow and they don’t plow the little road into the parking lot. The peaks hold onto their snow through June if you like the “white-capped” look, then as late summer arrives, wildflowers start popping up everywhere!
Weather changes quickly up here with it being so high in elevation – approximately 11,834 feet. Even though there isn’t much walking, and the trails are easy, you will get more winded, especially if you aren’t originally from a place of higher elevation. So go slow, take your time, and drink lots of water!
No permits or entry fee required, even for elopements. Though, if you’re planning on having a gathering of people I would keep it around 10 as to avoid blocking paths and feeling crowded.
BONUS: we stop at the actual divide parking lot just a minute or two drive up the mountain for even CRAZIER mountain views. The trails are a little more narrow and more “up”, but is a really cool spot to stop at for a few photos at the end of your session!
3. Lost Gultch Overlook – Boulder
A stunning overlook spot just off the road up Flagstaff Mountain in Boulder. This is a very popular spot especially during sunset, so we may need to work around some other people, but everyone’s super friendly up there!
I recommend good shoes because we will be walking across a rocky structure to get to the best overlook spots.
Parking can fill fast, especially during sunset, and there is a fee during certain times of year. Just follow the signage 🙂
I love pairing this spot with Chautauqua Park, going to the park spot first, then this overlook for a second spot (only a 20 minute drive apart up the mountain)
4. Brainard Lake, Ward (near Estes)
Part of Indian Peaks Wilderness, Brainard Lake is a beautiful recreational lake area with alpine views, lakeside access, and neat little spots in surrounding pine forests. It is a recreation area, so people do come here to fish, camp, and paddle board. Come sunset, the crowds tend to thin out as people head home or go back to their sites for dinner, so I usually recommend evening/late afternoon for sessions here.
There is a Timed Entry System for Brainard Lake so go online to https://www.recreation.gov/timed-entry/10087515/ticket/10087519 to reserve your entry into the recreation area. As of right now (August 2026), I’m unsure if the timed entry system is permanent or just for busy summer/fall monthts. Check the government website frequently for updates!
5. Echo Lake – Evergreen
Right around Mt. Blue Sky is this beautiful lake and park with a few hiking trails, Echo Lake. A popular fishing spot, and absolutely gorgeous practically year round, this is a beautiful spot that is accessible literally from the road. Just park…there the lake is!
This is an amazing spot for lake views, evergreen forests, and “middle-of-the-road” photos without walking hardly more than 10 minutes tops. This spot is popular in the summer, so just be prepared to see other people on the trail. During the late summer/fall months (late August-October), the foot traffic dwindles drastically, especially around late afternoon/evening (catching a trend here?)

6. Crested Butte
About a 5 hour drive from Denver, Crested Butte has ALLLLL the easily accessible mountain vista views. Seriously, every single one of the photos above are a completely different spot in the town.
Popular around early to mid July for it’s wildflowers (they have a wildflower festival around the middle of July every year), the purple lupines are popular spectacle to see. The amount of snowfall during the winter does affect how the wildflowers bloom, so they can differ from year to year. I’ve been every year for the last 4 years during different times in the summer so I have a pretty good sense of when and where the flowers will bloom!

7. San Sophia Overlook, Telluride
Even further from Crested Butte is Telluride, about a 7 hour drive from Denver. Absolutely gorgeously green in June and July (the San Juans actually get quite a bit of rain every year!), and I’m sure it would be stunning in the fall as well. There are soooo many aspens around, especially on the gondola ride between downtown and San Sophia Overlook, which is the tallest point you can get to!
Typically a dismount for skiers in the winter, this spot offers some really beautiful hiking trails in the summer with actual 360 degree views of the mountains. You see the views as soon as you step out of the gondola station so it’s truly easily accessible for everyone.
8. Guanella Pass, Grant
One of the most popular spots for fall colors, Guanella Pass has a lot of different hiking trails on the sides of the road to stop at, but once you hit the top of the pass, there’s plenty of parking and gorgeous mountain views!
If you’re wanting peak colors for the fall, consider the last 2 weeks of September (these photos were taken the last day of September in 2025).
Fall colors are affected by the rainfall and fluctuation of temperatures in the fall, so every year can look a little different, especially if there’s a wind storm (or early snow storm) that comes through and knocks the delicate leaves off early. We can only collaborate with, not control, Mother Nature.
You Don’t Have to Hike for the Views
At the end of the day, your photo session should feel like an experience you actually want to be part of—not a workout you have to survive for the sake of a pretty backdrop. Colorado has no shortage of incredible views, and thankfully, some of the best ones don’t require a three-hour hike to reach them…honestly most of these were a 5 minute walk from the parking lot, if that!
